Improving IEEE 802.15.4 for Low-latency Energy-e cient Industrial Applications

چکیده
The IEEE 802.15.4 standard for LR-WPANs is becoming a de-facto standard for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) applications in industrial fields. In this paper, we evaluate the latency performance of the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol based on a typical industrial scenario: a star network with 20 devices that send short messages (1 Byte) to the PAN coordinator. We analyzed the behavior of the GTS mechanism in the standard analytically. The results reveal essential limitations of the standard for low-latency applications in automation environments. According to our findings, we propose an enhanced protocol version that fully supports industry demands on low-latency communication. Our protocol version uses the original physical layer and, thus, can be implemented conveniently using cheap IEEE 802.15.4 hardware. The analytical results prove that we are able to meet the guaranteed low latency of 10 ms as specified by typical automation environments.

The IEEE 802.15.4 protocol has become the primary solution for many Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Network (LR-WPAN) applications. This is especially the case for industrial sensor network applications such as automation control. We contribute to the better understanding of the protocol behavior by presenting a set of results of simulation experiments. Our results outline the capabilities of t...
متن کاملAn Energy Efficient Clustering Method using Bat Algorithm and Mobile Sink in Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of sensor nodes with limited energy. Energy efficiency is an important issue in WSNs as the sensor nodes are deployed in rugged and non-care areas and consume a lot of energy to send data to the central station or sink if they want to communicate directly with the sink. Recently, the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol is employed as a low-power, low-cost, and low rat...

Wireless sensor networks have been widely applied in industrial applications especially since the release of IEEE 802.15.4 standard. By participating in an automobile project in which an IEEE 802.15.4 based sensor and actuator network is deployed to measure and control the vibrations of an automotive system, we need to study many metrics of IEEE 802.15.4 sensor networks (e.g., packet delivery r...
